Maybe you’re looking to rent out your home for a short period of time, like the summer. It is not uncommon in Walnut Creek, CA (and other places) for people to rent out their home for 2 to 4 months as a summer destination- especially if they are going on vacation for a long-period of time, too. We here at Benson Property Management have put together some tips to help you rent out your home this summer. However, if you truly need professional help (and we believe everyone could use some professional help to avoid issues in the future), please contact us! We are here to market and manage your home!
TIPS FOR RENTING OUT YOUR HOME THIS SUMMER:
1. Remove “you” from your home. No one wants to rent a home filled to the brim with the other person’s personal items or photos. Clear surfaces, give plants that need TLC to a neighbor, store all of your personal items away. Perfume, make up, shower gel for men, notebooks, computers, etc. All the personal touches need to be stored away.
2. Understand that you are providing towels, etc. and therefore will have to buy more than what you have. Towels are a big deal when you look at summer home vacation review websites. Most people use extra towels on vacation, taking an extra shower before dinner or when they come home after a day of sightseeing. If you don’t have a place to hang up extras, leave them stacked by the sink or on the toilet seat or folded up on the bed. Towels are a big thing, if you leave extra towels, you may have both a positive review from the renter but you may also have a summer renter for the next couple of years.
3. Leave a guide to your home behind. This is overlooked often but it makes a big difference between getting tons of phone calls about the home or not. Note where to park, any tricks to turning on lights, faucets, etc. and make sure you note where to find the nearest grocery store, Target, etc.
We also think the guide should include the phone number to the only pizza place that will deliver, the best local places to eat and visit, and which neighbors are friendly and which don’t want to be bothered. Remember, personal touches make a difference!
